As you get further into your pregnancy you will undoubtedly deal with lower back pain and/or hip pain. As someone who is already a little less mobile, and a little less flexible than before; an addition to back and hip pain can make life a whole lot harder. Back pain can really impact on your quality of life; denying you your much-needed sleep by cramping and spasming no matter in what position you lie, before forcing you to get up and pace the floor at all hours of the night to try and relieve the pain so you can finally get some rest

Bringing Home Baby
There is always so much attention placed on pregnancy and labour that often the postpartum period is one that is forgotten about and neglected. Mums are often so overwhelmed by well meaning visitors and “advice” in the first weeks after baby is born, that once they are able to settle down and try and parent their new baby, confusion, worry and self-doubt immediately becomes all consuming. Many people have no idea what I do. These are some of the most common questions I get asked…
”Doula…what is that? What do you do?”
The word doula is actually a Greek word meaning “women’s servant”. Historically women have been supporting other women during pregnancy and labour for centuries and being a doula means I continue to do this.
True self-reflection is rare…but when you have the time and space to look at your life and relationships, it can be an absolute gift. It wasn’t until I was about 8 years into my parenthood journey that I realised that self-care, both emotionally and physically, had been put on hold for such a long time, that I had lost a real sense of who I was. At the time, I can not deny that I was in a very lucky position…from the outside I had it all...3 happy and healthy children, a stable and loving marriage and financial security. Why then did I feel so lost? The answer was actually very simple…. I had forgotten about me. I didn’t know who I was apart from being a mother and wife.
You've Never Heard of a Doula
You don't know what you don't know - something I tell my kids all the time! And if you've never heard of a doula, the role they play in pregnancy and birth or the benefits of their support then you can't really benefit from it. Fortunately doula support is becoming more mainstream and widely known - antenatal classes are recommending us, as are some midwives and obstetricians, and of course past clients recommend their care to friends too!
Today I met with three clients and their babies and caught up on how motherhood is treating each of them. These women and their partners each employed me as their doula, and for that I will forever be grateful. My questions in this blog are:
1 How do I choose the right client, and how do clients choose the right doula? 2 Did I know when I met these women that I was the right doula for them? 3 Is it ok that I want to continue a relationship with each of these women and their babies, or is my job done?
Are you currently pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant? Something to consider is the health of your spine and nervous system. We are taught a lot how to brush and take care of our teeth, not taught a lot about our spines and how important they are in supporting us through pregnancy. Also the nervous system which is housed in the spine is the master system in the body sending all the messages through to every cell, tissue and organ. With all the changes and development that is happening in a women’s body it is important for us to make sure that the nervous system is working and communicating at optimal.
As a society we are very focused on pregnancy and birth - and rightly so, it’s a huge life event after all. But not much is spoken about the period that immediately follows. The more clients that I support, the more I notice that this time comes almost as an unexpected shock, mostly because of the focus placed on birth as the main event - when really, birth is just the start, the beginning of your parenting journey. I've outlined some points below to consider so that you can prepare a little before you have your beautiful baby in your arms.
